Mary MacKillop Museum Adelaide

Attractions

The Mary MacKillop Museum celebrates Australia’s first saint and the many heroic and determined women who have followed her.
This is one of South Australia’s greatest stories. A 24-year-old woman starts an enterprise, the Sisters of Saint Joseph, which spreads to all parts of Australia and to New Zealand, Peru, Timor-Leste and other countries.
The modern galleries take you through the intimate stories of individual sisters using audio pens and touch screens. They’re tales of endurance, courage, tragedy and all kinds of innovation in hundreds of communities where the sisters ran schools and influenced generations of Australians.

The museum is set in the grounds of the Josephite sister’s second mother house. You can visit the nearby chapel for a few moments of quiet reflection. This beautiful chapel, which is still in use, was erected by Mary MacKillop and opened in 1876. There is also a garden for reflection.
