Famed as the “opal capital of the world”, Coober Pedy is one of Australia’s most interesting towns. Opals were first discovered here in 1915 and the area around town has since become riddled with holes (over a million, it’s said) from miners searching for these beautiful gemstones. The town is also famous for its “dugouts”, underground homes built to escape the scorching summer heat. With the weather cooling down, it’s the perfect time to make the journey out to Coober Pedy.

Opal Festival
The Coober Pedy Opal Festival is on again this Easter long weekend. Get down there on Saturday, 15 April for the all fun and excitement of the street parade, with live music, fireworks and plenty of food and stalls. The Gem Trade Show will be held on the same weekend and is a chance to learn about opals and buy one for yourself.
