It’s a Kiwi staple and a ‘must do’ on the list for visitors to New Zealand – no, we’re not talking about kiwifruit, pavlova or the mighty Marmite – it’s the simplicity and deliciousness of fish ‘n chips. While the Aussies love to tell us we call them fush ‘n chups, however you say it, it’s a great meal for a budget-friendly price. And apparently, we often do it better than anywhere in the world!
Rotorua – the home of great fish ‘n chip shops
It’s hard to name just one fish ‘n chip shop in Rotorua, one of the main tourism centres of New Zealand. For many years running Oppies Fish ‘n Chips have been one of the best in the country, renowned for their crispy yet fluffy chips and succulent deep-fried fish portions. You will find it on Fenton Street and won’t be disappointed.
Not far up the road (and around a few corners) another traditional favourite should be sampled. Locals and visitors alike make a beeline for this shop – Devon Seafoods in Devon Street is the go to for the freshest fish. Whether it’s snapper, gurnard or terakihi – pick the fish that you choose or even select something directly from the fresh catch cabinet and have them prepare it for you. While you wait, enjoy their marinated mussels or depending on the season, the fresh oysters too!
Still in the Bay of Plenty – Tauranga’s fresh fish
Surrounded by the ocean, it’s easy to see how the fish is so amazing here and one of the best spots to find it is definitely Bobby’s Fresh Fish Market in Dive Crescent. With its waterfront location, fish is delivered straight from the fishing boats to the back door, while hot delicacies are being served over the counter. Both locals and visitors alike travel just to enjoy these fish ‘n chips but be warned, this takeaway shop can be popular so get ready to contend with a queue – it’s worth the wait though!
Cosy Corner Holiday Park is only 10 minutes’ drive from Bobby’s Fresh Fish Market, so ask for a take away and head back to your accommodation so you can enjoy fish ‘n chips on the beautiful Mount Maunganui Beach, only 80 meters away! As well as being cosy, this park also has an outdoor swimming pool, a hot tub and a games room – no one in the family will ever get bored!
A Kiwi legend – the Mangonui Fish Shop
With a history more than seven decades in the making, the Mangonui Fish Shop is a must visit. It’s not the biggest café you will find in Northland, but it must be one of the busiest. Selling fresh fish ‘n chips wrapped in newsprint to be served at their tables or on the beach, this shop has a reputation worth the travel. Sit out on their tables on a large deck over the ocean and await the eager seagulls that we well used to having a few chips thrown their way. Enjoy their house made treats, plus you can down a cold one as they have a fully licensed bar too!
PJ’s Chalet in Hanmer Springs
Rated as one of the top in the area by Trip Advisor, PJs has a strong following for its fish ‘n chips as well as tasty burgers. For those of you with dietary requirements, PJ’s are known to cater for those needing gluten free food too. Located nice and close to the hot pools, this casual outdoor dining spot has a reputation for great fish, big burgers and a selection of other great foods. While it may not be the cheapest chippie in town, it’s worth the spend.
If you are looking for a place to stay in Hanmer Springs, Alpine Adventure Holiday Park is only a 4 minute drive from PJs! They offer a large range of accommodation options: cabins, self-contained units, caravans or even camp sites. You are sure find something to suit your needs! And the ‘cherry on the cake’ – this is a pet friendly holiday park, so you can bring your furry friend with you!
Akaroa’s top spot…
The small seaside town of Akaroa, near Christchurch, is another renowned spot for a good package of fish ‘n chips. Whether you are picking up a takeaway, or eating in at their café (with both inside or alfresco options), the Akaroa Fish and Chip Shop has a big reputation. For those looking to sample more of New Zealand’s tasty seafood, check out the deals for 1kg of steamed mussels, or their seafood combo meals. Delish!
